MY 2 CENTS ON THE ART OF HYPOCRISY AND DECEIT

MY 2 CENTS ON THE ART OF HYPOCRISY AND DECEIT

Hypocrisy in my school of thought is  the art of preaching water while comfortably sipping wine. It is what is terribly wrong with this world. A great deal of people have suffered under this vice, some have even lost their lives. However, I don’t think this vice will face extinction anytime soon. But it is wise to speak out against evil.

Deceit on the other hand is the art of misrepresenting the truth. It is a very rampant vice done for several reasons, some good but others malicious. The malicious aspect is the focus of my discussion. Words cannot describe how deceit has brought about detrimental effects like loss of lives, breaking of friendships and relationships, destruction of property as well as prison sentences to those accused of this vice.

Religion is a great place to start my discussion. Throughout history, mankind has always believed in the existence of a superior being(s).This superior being(s) in most religions has laid out a set of rules in which the created are to abide by in order to gain merit. Merit in this case includes a prosperous life with riches, good health or ultimately going to paradise when the depart from this world. However, people have twisted scripture to their own will. It is now all about cherry picking pieces of scripture that work in their favour and discarding those that do not. I don’t understand this concept. Shouldn’t the word of God be taken in its entirety?

Preachers nowadays are the worst. It is a shame to notice of how quite a number of preachers shame vices such as corruption, while they themselves are recipients of such ‘donations’ from politicians with well-known reputations of the vice. Others use the pulpit to condemn defilement while secretly luring underage girls to their rooms for ‘prayers’ and perform God-knows-what to them. Cases of the latter are very common in my hometown in Kenya.

Don’t get me wrong, I have my own bouts of hypocrisy and deceit here and there. However, the impact of mine cannot be compared to the catastrophic nature caused by people in power. That brings me to politics. The hypocrisy  and deception by politicians is overwhelming  and no words can be used to describe them.

It is very sad to see some politicians drag their rival’s name through the mud for actions that they themselves have committed. Others have the audacity to claim that they are helping their constituents while in real sense they are making policies that oppress them. A good number in fact steal money meant for development projects, and claim that they weren’t allocated enough money for such projects.

Where did we go wrong? This is a question I often ask myself. Reason being your own family could even be embroiled in hypocritical and deceitful acts that may leave you bewildered. For instance in my locality, there was a widowed guy who went abroad to work and left his children under the care of his brother. The guy used to make sure that he sent money each and every month to his brother for the upkeep of his children. In addition to this he also sent an additional sum of money for the construction of his house. For the longest time, his brother sent him photos showing him of the progress of the ongoing construction.

A year later, the guy came back to Kenya abruptly. It turned out that his brother did not take the children to school, and neither had he constructed the house . What he used to do was take pictures of the neighbour’s house that was undergoing construction and send it to him. The guy became angry and confronted his brother demanding to know why he had done that. The brother got agitated too and attacked him, sending him to hospital with multiple bruises.  As of writing this article, the case is now getting battled out in court.

Myself I cannot wrap my head around that incident. This is because the guy thought his own sibling was trustworthy and had his own interest at heart. It turns out he had an ill agenda. It is very bad to deceive people for your own selfish gain. The art of deception as well as hypocrisy brings a lot of trust issues which can be detrimental in establishing relationships with others.

In my closing remarks, I seek to say that we should refrain from vices that we can avoid. It is not fun to watch a person suffer as a result of our actions. Have some empathy.
